Franny & Zooey Essay Assignment

Now that we have discussed the characters and ideas present in Salinger’s Franny & Zooey, it is time to develop an essay showing how the ideas we arrived at are developed through the incidents in the novel. I want to see how well you write a standard essay.
Topic #1: It is only through the thematic idea of finding the good or beauty (love) within everyone that Franny is able to attain some peace in her life. Given this thematic idea which we discussed in class, it is important to show how it develops through the scenes in the novel.
Write an essay in which you show how this idea develops. Use at least three specific examples from the novel, quoting passages whenever necessary to present the problems Franny is going through, the discussions she has with Lane and Zooey, and Zooey’s eventual understanding of what will help Franny (the Fat Lady idea). Use a standard 5 paragraph essay format and at least three quotations for support.
Topic #2: While JD Salinger spends much of his time using little girls as symbols in his book, William Golding uses little boys as symbols, but with very different results.
Write an essay in which you show how each author uses and interprets childhood and gender. Use specific examples from the novels, quoting passages whenever necessary. Use a standard 5 paragraph essay format (unless another organizational method works better) and at least one quotation for each body paragraph for support..
